Historical Notes About

Città della Pieve is a picturesque hilltop town in Umbria, known for its medieval charm and Renaissance art. Founded by the Etruscans, it later became a Roman settlement. During the Middle Ages, it grew in importance due to its strategic position between Perugia, Orvieto, and Chiusi.

In the 13th century, it gained autonomy as a free commune and was later contested between Perugia and the Papal States. The town is famously the birthplace of Pietro Vannucci, known as Perugino (1446–1523), a master Renaissance painter and teacher of Raphael.

The property is located a few meters from Panicale, a small town which lies on a hill at the foot of Mount Petrarvella and overlooks Lake Trasimeno. Panicale has been included in the list “I Borghi più belli d’Italia” (Italy’s most beautiful towns) and has been awarded the Orange Flag by the Italian Touring Club. It is the ideal location to reach other typical Umbrian towns such as Città della Pieve, Paciano, Montepulciano, and Castiglione del Lago as well as larger cities such as Perugia, Assisi, Orvieto, and Foligno.

Città della Pieve, a charming medieval hilltop town in Umbria, is best known as the birthplace of Renaissance master Perugino, whose stunning frescoes—including The Adoration of the Magi in the Oratory of Santa Maria dei Bianchi—adorn its churches. Stroll through narrow vaulted alleys like Via delle Volte, admire the 14th-century Rocca fortress with panoramic valley views, and explore historic sites like Palazzo della Corgna. Don’t miss the lively Palio dei Terzieri, a medieval festival held in August, or the chance to sample local saffron and wine. With its rich art, well-preserved architecture, and breathtaking landscapes, this hidden gem offers an authentic taste of Umbria. Nearby, Lake Trasimeno and Tuscan towns like Montepulciano make for perfect side trips.
